| Aspen 2-stroke petrol fuels change More local authorities, contractors and homeowners are turning to environmentally friendly 2-stroke petrol for use in groundcare machinery, such as brush cutters, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and pedestrian mowers. Improving the working environment for those operating in close contact with 2-stoke engines is an obvious benefit of using this special fuel. Significantly though, it’s the higher performance and longer life from two stroke engines that’s the real bottom line benefit. One of many users to benefit from ready-mixed petrol for two stroke engines is Dacorum Borough Council’s Grounds Maintenance Department, who switched to Aspen 2t fuel three years ago. Aspen 2t is an alkylate petrol, ready-mixed with 2% specially formulated biodegradable oil. Alkylate is produced from pure gases obtained when refining crude oil, resulting in a purer, cleaner petrol, comprising only ten active components, and free from the many more hazardous compounds found in ordinary commercial petrol - such as benzene, sulphur and other aromatic hydrocarbons. Dacorum’s Grounds Maintenance is responsible for over 4.5 million sq. metres of grassed areas in the Borough’s parks, open spaces, amenity areas, highway verges, hedges and sports pitches. A workforce of 50 covers an area of West Hertfordshire that includes the towns of Hemel Hempstead, Tring and Berkhamsted. During the 35 week growing season, local horticultural equipment dealer, Hempstead Plant, supplies Dacorum with around 3,500 litres of Aspen 2t fuel. Philip Kilshaw, Grounds Maintenance Manager at Dacorum, describes Aspen 2t fuel as “just perfect for the job” and goes on to explain: “We first decided on Aspen to help solve a problem we had with engines seizing-up. We had identified inconsistent mixing of fuel by operators as a major contributing factor. The move to Aspen completely eradicated the problem but, at that time, we didn’t realise what a positive contribution the fuel was to make.” Mr Kilshaw adds: “Our operators claim to feel better for not having to breathe in dangerous exhaust fumes and smoke. Being ready-mixed it’s much more convenient and operators find machines start more easily, even after standing idle for lengthy periods. And, because engines run more efficiently they vibrate less and last much longer.” Jeremy Pilch, MD of Plantoil, distributors of Aspen 2t in the UK says: “As two-stroke users become more aware that exposure to exhaust and petrol fumes can cause health problems, they are moving to Aspen 2t.” “Furthermore, because it’s purer than normal petrol, there’s no build up of resins in carburettors, while pistons and plugs are much cleaner. This means that engines are less stressed, resulting in optimum performance, extended life and reduced maintenance requirements.” Unlike normal petrol, Aspen 2t can be stored for long periods (years) without deterioration. It is available in 5L cans and can be purchased from selected Husqvarna dealers, or direct from Plantoil for pallet orders.
