Editorial Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in contributing to Euroarb. We welcome submissions on a variety of subjects, but these guidelines are primarily for those submitting bylined feature articles.

Start with a proposal
Although Euroarb actively encourages new writers, we often find ourselves working with authors whom we have sought out or who have contributed to our publications for some time. We ask writers who would like to publish in Euroarb to submit written queries; phone calls are strongly discouraged. Prospective writers should familiarize themselves with recent issues of the magazine. If you don't receive the publication, an archive of articles is included on the Euroarb Web site, www.euroarb.eu.com. Back issues can be obtained by making an e-mail request.

Before writing a complete manuscript, please submit a proposal in the form of a brief summary and detailed outline. The summary should state the topic that will be covered, the purpose of the article, the intended audience and what information it will impart to the reader. Articles must be original, unpublished work that has not been submitted for publication elsewhere. The article may be based upon material developed for other purposes, such as conference papers, speeches or internal reports. The proposal should be no more than one page long. When completed, please e-mail the proposal to Steve Reynolds at steve@euroarb.eu.com .

Content

Style
Writing is conversational rather than scholarly, which makes reading straightforward and enjoyable. The benefit(s) of reading your article must be clearly stated within the first two or three paragraphs. Define all acronyms. Attribute all quotes; include a person's name, title and company.
The article should be kept as non-commercial as possible. Concentrate on the equipment and its applications, not brand names. In addition, because many authors are so focused on the equipment, they frequently forget the people who operate equipment. Let them speak for you, which will make your article much more meaningful.

Headlines
Each headline should have a noun, verb and object, and clearly state the practical benefit of reading the article.

Captions
All photographs and charts should have narrative, rather than label, captions of 15-25 words that explain how the image or chart relates to the article. Do not repeat portions of the text in captions. The captions should provide new information.

Bylines and Author Biographies
Most authors of features and columns are not paid, but their names are published in a byline. An author's professional affiliation is noted in a one- or two-sentence biography at the end of the article. A brief biography must accompany each manuscript. In the biography, include the author's name, title, company (or organisation), and company's (or organisation's) full address.

Other editorial points
Your text will be edited for grammar, organization, style and consistency

Submissions

Text
Send your article via e-mail in Microsoft Word or text format. Type the article double spaced, with a flush-left margin. Features should be between 1,000-1,500 words long. All submissions are subject to editing and approval.

Do not mail or fax articles.

Graphics
Interesting, dynamic, colour graphics will increase your article's ability to capture the reader's attention and make your story more readily understood. Please send graphics with a manuscript whenever possible. Send graphics that illustrate the focus and content of the article, try to show activity and/or include people.

Available graphics should be submitted along with the finished manuscript. We prefer you to submit your graphics digitally in either TIFF or JPG format. Minimum size is 3" x 5" at 300 dpi resolution. Due to the large size of graphic files, we will accept them on CDs. If you have some ideas for illustrations, but aren't sure how to execute them, please contact us to discuss the concepts. Our team of skilled graphic artists can work with authors to develop high-quality artwork appropriate to the text.

File Types: QuarkXpress 4.0, Adobe Illustrator 9.0 (saved as EPS) preferred. Quark 6.0, Adobe Illustrator CS, and Photoshop CS are acceptable. High-resolution, print-ready Adobe Photoshop 5.5 PDFs (saved as EPS or TIFF) are acceptable.

Please make sure all images are CMYK prior to saving as PDF. If IBM format supplied, the file must be in viewable in EPS or TIFF format with fonts embedded as that format. Please include all imported graphic support files. Please compress all files submitted via e-mail or FTP.
Resolutions: 300 DPI and 133 line screens are recommended for black-and-white and colour ads.

Response
Once you have sent us a proposal, we will try to respond to you within 30 days. Although 30 days is our goal, we don't always meet it, due to other projects, deadlines or travel schedules. If you do not hear from us within that time, please feel free to contact the editor about the status of your proposal. The typical time between initial inquiry and a published article is between four and six months. Subjects that are time sensitive and newsworthy may be expedited more swiftly. If your proposal is accepted you will receive a manuscript submittal deadline. This deadline conveys a strong interest in your proposal, but does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted or published.
Unbylined contributions

We strive to keep our readers abreast of important industry news, including news about companies, people and industry gatherings. Although we have our own active news department and receive numerous industry press releases, we also accept first-hand reports and industry news from outside sources for possible inclusion in our news sections. These items should not exceed 500 words and should include a contact name and phone number associated with the subject organization so we can pursue further information if necessary. Convention and meeting reports should explain the substance of the event with specific content examples and include conference statistics. These items will not be paid for or bylined. For more information on contributing news or conference reports to our publications, contact the editor.
